– Prof. Bernard Foing (European Space Agency): Moon Village for a Sustainable Future
– Jamal Ageli (Royal Academy of Art): "Playing ping pong in space?" – rethinking spacesuit design
– Panel Discussion
Can we build permanent housing on the Moon? Will we be able to live in space for longer periodes of time? And most importantly: Can we play ping pong on the surface of another planet? Important questions for our future that need to be solved!
We, the European Space Agency, the Moon Gallery Project and Soma Suit are thrilled to contribute to designblok19 – Prague’s International Design Festival with an exhibition, lectures and workshops! Visitors can find us in the Moon Habitat, Designerie, the central exhibition space of the festival.
Moon Gallery is an international collaborative artwork and a gallery of ideas worth sending to the Moon. Moon Gallery intends to launch 100 artifacts to the Moon within the compact format of a 10 x 10 x 1 cm plate on a lunar lander exterior panelling as early as 2022.
In this Petri dish-like gallery, we are developing culture for future interplanetary society.
Concept:
– An international collaborative artwork and a gallery of ideas worth sending to the Moon
– A 10 by 10 cm patch of Lunar Lander exterior panelling is one intended venue for this Gallery.
(There are 100 cells available of 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm for submissions)
– Dissemination of information & aesthetic crowdsourced organism online.
– The educational program offering ArtMoonMars & Moon Village workshops worldwide.
Team:
Anna Sitnikova (curator, exhibition designer), Elizaveta Glukhova (curator, graphic designer), Bernard Foing (space sector expert and visionary), Alexander Zaklynsky (gallery founder)
Royal Academy of Art Soma Suit team believes that space migration is only possible if we can sustain important human qualities. We should be able to sense different materials, freely move and explore. Today astronauts are wearing bulky and rigid costumes. It looks cool, but do you really want to spend years in it? Our team uses innovative materials to keep people safe in extreme conditions and let them live. We want you to feel comfortable while having your first space date. The human interaction is in the core of our project. We want to break the common vision of space as a lonely and introverted place. Interplanetary life can be cozy too.Our vision is to reimagine the iconic shape of spacesuit. Some of our ambitious goals include:
* Make the costume sustainable and easy to repair
* The costume should become a «second skin» which allows people to sense different surfaces and each other. We don’t want them to feel like they interact through soulless online video chats.
* Nature is our biggest inspiration, not the sci-fi movies of the last century.
* Represent human’s beauty and state their presence, not predatory intentions.
* Keep people individuality and let them freely express themselves
* Involve community into the discussion and grab the attention of the major players in a space field. All the information about the project is available to the public. We welcome everyone to share their thoughts. TWSS is open for collaborations.
Guest lecturer – Bernard Foing is Astrophysicist at ESA ESTEC, EarthMoonMars Explorer, Executive Director of International Lunar Exploration Working Group (ILEWG) and Prof at VU Amsterdam, ISU, ISAE, FIT etc.. He served as elected President of ESTEC Staff Association Committee 2012-2017 (representing 1400 ESTEC colleagues). He performs Space and MoonMars research and MoonVillage studies and activities. He has worked at ESA ESTEC as visiting scientist, staff scientist, Research Unit Leader, Head of Research Division, Chief scientist and Senior Exploration Officer.
He has been the lead Project scientist, father of SMART-1 first european mission to the Moon, from conception in 1996 to lunar final impact in 2006. He has led studies of lunar orbiters and landers, and technology developments. With ILEWG, he has been promoting international collaborative projects, the preparation for a global robotic village, and a human International Lunar Base.
Co-investigator of space missions instruments such as TRC, SOHO, XMM, Mars-Express, COROT, BIOPAN, Chandrayaan-1, Expose/International Space Station, ExoMars.
He worked 3 years with the European Southern Observatory ESO La Silla and French embassy in Chile and joined the French National Centre for Research CNRS.
After studies at Lycée Louis-Le-Grand, Ecole Normale Supérieure Education & Technology (ENSET Cachan), a national competition as Agrégé Professor of Physics, he obtained a PhD in Astrophysics and Space Techniques using a sounding rocket experiment (France CNRS and US New Mexico, Boulder CU, Harvard Observatory).
