About this event
Cardiff will be hosting a Space Talks event on the 17th of November at the National Museum Cardiff. As part of the family day to celebrate the exhibit of Tim Peake’s spacecraft at the museum, three Space Talks will be held throughout the day on all things space!
The talks and workshops will be given by local astronomers, specialising in science research and science education. You can book to attend the talks by clicking the links below, or by turning up to the event on the day (please note: there are a limited number of tickets, so book in advance to avoid disappointment!)
11:00 am – Sarah Eve Roberts, a Science Educator for Las Cumbres Observatory, will be showing everyone how to build satellites! Using an amazing new web app, participants will be able to design and launch their own satellite to carry out an important goal. You’ll decide the satellite’s size, orbit, instruments and power sources, whilst balancing a money and time budget! BOOK TICKETS
12:30 pm – Matthew Allen, a science communicator at Cardiff University, will be discussing whether space rocks do indeed rock, or whether they are simply a danger to us all! He’ll also bring a few meteorites along for everyone to hold. BOOK TICKETS
2:00 pm – Jenifer Millard, an astronomer and science communicator at Cardiff University, will dazzle and delight us with the latest exoplanet research – planets that orbit other stars in the Universe. She’ll finish with an interactive, audience led activity to estimate the number of alien civilisations that could exist in our galaxy! BOOK TICKETS
These talks will form part of the National Museum Cardiff, Space Capsule Family Day. Join us for the exhibition launch day of Tim Peake’s Soyuz space capsule at National Museum Cardiff. We’ll be celebrating with music provided by the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and there will be some space themed family crafts to keep hands occupied. Cardiff Astronomical Society will also be joining us to tell us more about the capsule itself and to answer all your space questions.
